Reverse Osmosis is the most effective form of filtration removing all contaminants including up to 99% of Aluminum, Asbestos, Fluoride, Iron, Lead, Zinc, Mercury, Calcium, Sodium etc. Micro-organisms including Giardia, Cryptosporidium, Meningitis, Hepatitis, Viruses and Bacteria. Toxic metals and radioactive elements. Pesticides and Herbicides including DDT.

Reverse Osmosis consists of several different stages to remove sediment, chemicals including Chlorine and other contaminants, the reverse osmosis membrane, a storage container for the pure water and a post-carbon post filter.

• Stage one is a pre-filter to remove any sediment, rust etc.
• Stage two is a chlorine removal carbon filter as chlorine is detrimental to the cellulose reverse osmosis membrane.
• Stage three is a Filmtec TFC (Thin Film Composite) ultra-fine membrane that separates the water molecules producing pure water and wastewater.
• Stage 4 is a polishing carbon for taste with the option of replacing it with our Alkaline or Remineralising option.
• WASTE COMPONENT – in order to eliminate all minerals and other contaminants, wastewater is generated at Stage 3 when water is forced through the ultra-fine membrane. There are two exits from the membrane, pure water when is then polished through the final filter, and the exit is to eliminate contaminants.  This wastewater is then discharged through a black tube which is normally connected to the under-sink kitchen piping.

Reverse osmosis water is a slow production with water passing through an ultra-fine membrane to separate pure water from wastewater.  Water is produced at approx. 1 litre every 4 – 5 minutes and for this reason some form of water storage is required.  Whilst under-sink models have their own storage tank, portable models require the use of a small storage container, which can be plastic/ glass bottles or fridge containers.

The membrane rejects most of the dissolved substances in the water and allows only purified water to pass through.  The purified water then enters a storage container and the rejected water goes down the drain as waste.

 Unfortunately, Reverse Osmosis cannot be used to treat all the water entering your home for the following reasons.

1. Waste to pure water ratio. To eliminate filtered contaminants wastewater is produced in the filtration process. All Puregold Reverse osmosis uses 300 litres/day membranes, with a waste component of 1 litre of pure water to 1.5 litres of wastewater.
2. Slow Production. Puregold incorporates USA made Dow Filmtec Membranes in all portable and under-sink units. At 300 litres a day, 10 – 12 litres an hour or 1 litre every 4 minutes, a storage container is required.  All under-sink reverse osmosis come complete with a stainless steel storage tank, portable units require either a container, either glass bottles or a larger container.

We are often asked about expanding this basic filtration to a 5 – 6 or even 7-stage systems, including 2 carbon filters, which is simply not required and only increases your yearly cartridge change.

We recommend a 4-stage unit, incorporating a sediment pre-filter, carbon pre-filter, membrane and a post-filter.  Any additional stages should be for the addition of minerals and alkalinity to the pure water to ensure energised and remineralised water. Puregold Reverse Osmosis also include a service or flushing mode, which allows the flushing of any buildup of removed minerals from the membrane to maintain purity.  This is included on all Puregold portable and under-sink models, (not with Kwik Twist Easy Change range).
