Whilst water chemistry and contaminant removal is not complicated, filtration media does have its limitations.  Unfortunately some sellers will make claims particularly in regards to bacteria and fluoride.  The following will help understand what can be done by what method.

CARBON FILTRATION  – this works on absorption as well as a barrier to some contaminants including Giardia parasites.  Carbons quality is measured in microns, with the lower the micron the greater removal.

•  1 micron will remove Giardia, as well as all chlorine, pesticide residue, all chemical contaminants and some lead.
•  5 micron, which is used in reverse osmosis as a per filter will remove mainly Chlorine  whilst not restricting flow.

CERAMIC FILTRATION – used when bacteria is a concern, especially for tank water.  Has a ceramic outerskin with a 0.2 micron rating to ensure no bacteria or giardia pass through.  Needs pressure of around 40 psi to be effective.  Two options – Doulton Ultra Carb, which is a ceramic/carbon combination, as well as Doulton Sterysl, no carbon included and has better flow rate.

ULTRA FILTRATION  –  ultra fine membrane construction used in our Kwik Twist range, which can be used on both tank and mains pressure water supplies.

REVERSE OSMOSIS – FLUORIDE REMOVAL  – the ultimate filtration removing all minerals, particularly FLUORIDE, chemicals, parasites, bacteria, E-coli including salmonella etc.  All reverse osmosis units include pre filtration of both sediment and chlorine to protect cellulose membrane from chemical impurities. A 4 stage unit, incorporating a sediment and a chlorine pre filter, membrane and post filter is all that is required.  Any additional cartridges should only be for heavy sediment or hardness areas, or for adding minerals etc. back into the water.  5 – 6 and 7 stage units are in some cases merely increasing your yearly maintenance without any advantages.
